"...roll into Friday in style in the charming period dance hall, which dates back to the eighteenth century." - Time Out London
"The best venue in Central/West London!" - PR
"Forget that Friday feeling....Thursday is the best night of the week!" - JW
The Hammersmith Club is a real gem of a venue - a recently-renovated period dance hall with a great dance floor and plenty of original features!
A typical night at A-Train attracts around 50 people from all walks of life, and all age ranges (18+).
Come with friends, a partner or on your own - everyone is welcome and you'll soon feel at home!
The bar in the dance hall is open for drinks and snacks (crisps etc.) throughout the evening.
On occasion we run an after-party at A-Train with live music. On these nights all the classes run as usual with dancing/practice in between but from 10pm we have dancing to a live band - not to be missed!
Who goes to A-Train?
All levels of swing dancing experience are represented - from complete beginners to intermediates in the classes - and experienced dancers who come along after the classes to enjoy the social dancing. There are plenty of beginners and improvers, and every week new people come along to learn for the first time.
Please do join our regulars on our A-Train Facebook page!
Classes at A-Train
Join any week. No need to book (just turn up). No partner needed.

7.45pm - beginners class (Lindy hop fundamentals)
Learn all the basics with simple fun routines aimed at getting you dancing quickly - with plenty of emphasis on good lead/follow technique and connection as with all our classes! No experience required. Absolute beginners always welcome!
8.45pm - social dancing/practice
Practise what you've learnt! Social dancing to recorded music.
Beginners are encouraged to stay for the entire evening, the bar is open and you are welcome to sit and watch if you're not taking the improvers class.
9.15pm - improvers class
During the intermediates class there is a session for improvers at the bar end of the hall. This is a chance to consolidate the material you've learnt in beginners and move on to the trickier steps required for intermediates. Please note that this extra class is subject to teacher availability - if it's not running please feel free to have a go at the intermediates class or just enjoy a drink and wait for the final hour of dancing/practice.
Intermediates please do come along early and join in with the 8.45pm social dance/practice session.
9.15pm - intermediates Lindy hop class
Move your dancing to the next level! Expect lots on technique and style as well as steps. You need to have a reasonably good grasp of all the steps regularly taught in the beginners and improvers classes to take intermediates. So 6-count and 8-count basics plus basic knowledge of partnered Charleston steps is assumed. At the beginning of the class we will ask everyone to do a selection of basic steps - if you don't feel confident with these you should take the improvers class instead. In conjunction with our regular workshops this class is designed to set and maintain a really good fundamental level for intermediate-level Lindy hop in London.
Music and dancing at A-Train
After the classes we have dancing!
- Social dancing
From 10pm-11pm it's freestyle time - try out the moves you've learnt, or sit down, have a drink and watch what's going on (the bar in the dance hall is open all evening). Resident DJ Martin & occasional guests play "the best swing music in town" and are happy to take requests too.
- A-Train LATES
From 10pm-midnight - on occasion we run an after-party at A-Train with live music.
For LATES dates please see Dates.
We rotate partners regularly in the classes so you don't need to bring a partner and you get a chance to dance with everyone. This is the best way to learn and it's a great way to meet people too! Because of the numbers at A-Train it is not practical for couples to stay together - please join in the rotation, you will learn much quicker!
The teaching team at A-Train is lead by Martin Ellis with Jess Bowers and Liza Patoux - joined on occasion by Romayne Etwaroo, Sarah Phelps, Emily Duncombe and/or Rowan McLelland.

How to get to A-Train
A-Train is held at The Hammersmith Club - a stunning period dance hall in the heart of West London.
The Hammersmith Club is at 11 Rutland Grove, Hammersmith, London W6 9DH.
Entrance is via the large gate (pictured) then the new entrance porch to the left of the dance hall. NB the car park is private and must not be used.
By tube - Piccadilly, District or Hammermsith & City Lines to Hammersmith, 5-10 minutes walk.
From the tube exit cross towards King Street and then walk up Blacks Road into Hammersmith Bridge Road - Rutland Grove is the last turning on the right before the river/bridge.
Alternatively walk up King Street and turn left opposite Primark then continue straight (Bridge Ave then Bridge View after crossing under the flyover) until you reach Rutland Grove (look for Digby Mansions).
Turn right into Rutland Grove and the venue is on your left nestled between smart townhouses.
Walking - The Hammersmith Club is located one street back from the Riverside next to Hammersmith Bridge (the waterfront stretches from Hammersmith Bridge to Chiswick Eyot). If you are coming from the waterfront look for the Rutland pub as the venue is close to that.
By bus - any bus over Hammersmith Bridge - there is a stop right at the end of Rutland Grove.
By car - Just off the A4, Hammersmith is easily accessible by car from all directions. There is free parking on Lonsdale Road just the other side of Hammersmith Bridge from the venue and in some local streets. Kings Mall car park is just off King Street 5 mins walk from the venue - open 24/7 and very good value. Parking outside the venue in Rutland Grove is metered until 10pm.
